Sanlam Boland Kavaliers flyer Xavier Mitchell recently sat down with former Springboks Rudy Paige and Juan de Jongh on the Behind the Ruck Podcast, where he reflected on his remarkable journey from club rugby in Paarl and Wellington to becoming one of the standout performers in the 2026 SA Cup.

Mitchell spoke candidly about the hard work behind his 20 tries in a mere 10 games in the SA Cup season, explaining how extra training sessions, video analysis and a strong focus on defence helped elevate his game. He credited coaches, teammates and mentors for believing in him throughout his journey and emphasised that his success is rooted in hard work, humility and playing for the team rather than personal glory.

The Paarl East product also opened up about his upbringing, working as a builder alongside his grandfather before receiving his opportunity in professional rugby, and the inspiration he drew from his late uncle, Springbok legend Chester Williams. Mitchell described how support from family, coaches and senior players helped shape both the player and person he has become today. He also paid tribute to Cornal Hendricks, who inspired Mitchell during the short time they were teammates at the Kavaliers.

The 28-year-old outside centre, who has spent most of his recent games playing on the wing, also made mention of a recent meeting with his childhood hero, former Springbok captain, Jean de Villiers.

He funnily explained why the consumption of wine gums are now forever part of his pre-match ritual. To watch the full episode, click here.
